The GBBC and what it is
The GBBC is a bird count which happens annually each Presidents Day weekend, or another time in winter. The only problem with winter is that it's freezing cold! But, you get a huge reward, birds! Many interesting birds come here during winter including Dark-eyed juncos. The GBBC not only is fun, but it also benefits science and it helps ornithologists find where the bird is common, and where it's rare. It also helps them track migratory patterns and where the bird goes. Many kids and adults love doing the GBBC because it's so easy! How can you get involved? Just visit www.birdscource.org/gbbc and print out the checklist. Then, just watch for 15 minutes or more and write the number you saw next to the name of the bird. BUT, if you see 2 chickadees, then 5 more come, write 5 chickadees. You might have counted the same bird twice and that will not be good!
Anybody can do it, from toddlers to the elderly, this is simple and fun! Sometimes kids can spot birds better than adults! Surprising eh? Adults, keep 1 kid always by your side!
